BLYTHEWOOD - The South Carolina Highway Patrol, with the support of Walmart and the SC Troopers Association, spent time helping children across the state experience a little holiday joy ahead of Christmastime.

During Tuesday’s Shop with a Cop event, 150 children who suffered from a highway tragedy within the past year were invited to join SC Highway Patrol troopers at seven different Walmart locations across South Carolina. Thanks to those who generously donate to the SC Troopers Association, each child received a $150 gift card to spend how they wished.

“Sadly, these children have each faced terrible tragedies that left them grieving for a loved one,” SC Highway Patrol Commander Colonel Christopher Williamson said. “It’s an honor for the Highway Patrol to step up and serve as a comforting presence for these kids during what I know is a difficult holiday season for them.”

The Highway Patrol’s Victim Services Unit coordinated the event with Walmart stores across South Carolina. The unit invited surviving families of fatality victims, or families whose loved one experienced a life-altering injury, to attend.

“Many of us cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a loved one,” said Crystal Salley, manager of the Highway Patrol’s Victim Services Unit. “For families of fatality victims, this is a tragic reality. It’s a privilege to walk alongside them and show our support in their healing journey.”

The Shop with a Cop events aim to foster positive relationships between the youth and local law enforcement, as well as spread some holiday cheer for children in need. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has participated in this statewide event for the past two years, serving more than 250 families during that time.

A big thank you goes to those who donated to the SC Troopers Association and for the support of Walmart to make this event a success. For individuals interested in donating to future SCHP community events, please visit the SC Troopers Association website to learn more – www.sctroopers.org.
